It started with a stranger in the corner and a smooth tan stone that turns warm when danger is near. Then came the letter he was never supposed to open, the locked room at school no adult will explain, and the slow, sick feeling that the people closest to him aren't who they say they are.

Kian is twelve. He cries too much, talks back too much, and nobody takes him seriously, least of all his father. But something ancient has chosen him, something that's about to crack Kian's ordinary world of Flatfield, Ohio, wide open.
