DANGER! Swimming with the Ohnay is prohibited
This reminder follows an incident Saturday evening in which two visitors reportedly stopped their vehicle in the eastbound lane of Lake Road after spotting an Ohnay near the tree line.
“They just hopped the fence and jumped in! Luckily, I had my bullhorn just inside the garage,” resident Mabel Southwick said.
According to Chief Neesman, no injuries were reported. “The two teenagers were not Flatfielders! They were given a warning and escorted to the city border.”
Residents are asked to keep a reasonable distance, avoid approaching Ohnay after dusk, and never enter the water when they are active.
Chief Neesman also reminded residents that photographing an Ohnay is permitted from public property, provided doing so does not interfere with traffic or require crossing a posted boundary.
Historical Society examines unidentified artifact
Volunteers at the Flatfield Historical Society are attempting to identify an unusual object discovered among materials donated to the Society earlier this summer.
The object is a small tan-orange stone just smaller than a standard-sized domino. It has raised markings that extend outward from its center.
According to Society Director Denise Ennis, the artifact was found inside an unlabeled wooden box containing photographs, property records, and several maps dating from the early 1900s.
“If this looks familiar, please come down to the square and see me,” Ennis said.
The Society has contacted several regional museums for assistance.
Washington Elementary seeks crossing-guard volunteers
Washington Elementary is looking for additional volunteers to assist students during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.
“The drop-off lane is a lane, not a suggestion,” Safety Officer Worbley said. “We could use a few more volunteers out there reminding people of that.”
Volunteers must complete a background check and attend a short safety orientation.
Principal Anderson said the school especially needs help at the Turney Road crossing.
